Overcoming your Child’s Fear of Dentists

Fear of DentistsFew things strike fear into the hearts of children more than a trip to the dentist.  This includes the monsters that they just “know” are lurking in their closet and the fears they have about going to school for the first time.  Fear is normal.  However, helping your children overcome their fear of dentists is among the most important things you can do for them.  Here are some tips for helping your child overcome his/her fear of visiting the dentist.

Prepare them:  Find a book that teaches children that dentists are not to be feared and that maintaining healthy teach and gums is important.

Start them early:  Beginning around his/her first birthday, get into the habit of taking your child to the dentist so that it becomes routine.

Use a family dentist who specializing in treating children:  Dentists who treat adults only may not be used to putting children at ease.  At Family Dental Health Plans, you can easily find a family dentist through one of our affordable dental plans.

Don’t spread the fear:  Children are very intuitive when it comes to sensing how their parents feel.  Be sure to watch your behavior and language when visiting the dentist with your child.  (Be mindful of words like “hurt” and “pain.”)

Stay with your child:  Being there to comfort your child during his/her visit (particularly their first visit) is important.  Doing so can ensure that the child stays calm and anxiety free.

Of all the childhood fears that adults and children must try to overcome fear of dentists is one of the most important.  Teaching children this helps them to face other challenges in life and it helps them to develop healthy dental habits that will last a lifetime.
